Academic Booster Club

The Academic Booster Club (ABC) was created with the primary goal of honoring students and sponsors of GAC’s academic teams. In addition, the ABC promotes awareness of academic teams and their activities, raises funds to support the teams’ needs, and provides motivation and recognition of the teams.  For questions about how to join the ABC or to volunteer and assist teams in their endeavors, contact Dan or Suzanne Landreth at

The Academic Booster Club is proud to support the following teams.

Elementary Teams

Chess Team
Students learn the fundamentals of chess by applying the lessons of strategy.  In order to provide more tournament experience for our students, GAC became a USCF (United States Chess Federation) affiliate in the fall of 2002.  In addition, the faculty sponsors of the team became USCF Local Tournament Directors.  Our chess team students are becoming "mental warriors."

Helen Ruffin Readers Bowl Team
This team made of 4th and 5th grade students compete at the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl.  The competition is in game format testing students on their knowledge of pre-selected books from the Georgia Children's Book Award list.  Benefits to students include increased standardized test scores and reading comprehension, an appreciation for literature, enhanced verbal communication skills, team spirit and cooperation, and improved academic achievement.

Design Team
This team of 4th and 5th grade students designs, develops, and launches a web site that is judged on numerous merits in competition with peer school teams.  Graphic arts, layout design, and computer software tools are used by students as they plan and complete their contest web site.

Junior High Teams

Academic Team
Competing at the state level since 1991, the Academic Team has been the "team to beat" in academic competition and has proved academic excellence with numerous state championships.  Competition is rigorous and fun and requires many hours of practice and knowledge of a wide variety of topics.

Robotics Team
Students participate in exciting science and technology challenges.  Researching and designing real-world solutions to scientific questions and problems, students have the opportunity to participate in First LEGO League competitions.

Senior High Teams

Academic Team
This team has taken home three varsity state championships and five junior varsity state championships and has qualified for the NAQT National Championship five times.  Competitions are held in a team-based quiz bowl format with knowledge questions from every academic class offered at the high school level.  No cost to participate or practice, but there may be some travel expenses for away tournaments.

Debate Team
A challenging program in academic competition that encourages growth in the area of public speaking.  Debaters learn research skills and the art of persuasive argument in a context that also requires students to become well acquainted with key aspects of government policy.  The GAC debate program has been a powerhouse since 2000.

Envirothon Team
A competitive learning team tested at competitions on students' knowledge of environmental resources.  Prepares leaders of tomorrow on the positive and negative effects of our actions on the environment.  At Envirothon competitions, high school students from all over the United States and some foreign countries tackle and find solutions to problems in areas of soil, aquatics, forestry, wildlife, and other current environmental issues.

Math Team
Competitive events include algebra, geometry, and calculus with both individual and team matches.  Varsity team competes in-state and out-of-state.

Mock Trial Team

A high school activity for young men and women sponsored by the State Bar of Georgia.  Each year a fictional court case is provided to Georgia students to prepare for interscholastic, competitive courtroom trials.  Students play the roles of witnesses and attorneys in real courtrooms with practicing adult attorneys and judges as observers and evaluators. 

Robotics Team
Students get involved in real-world engineering as they are challenged to design, build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.  Team focuses on training, planning and creation of a strong teamwork foundation, allowing the team to enter the competitive arena in this growing field combining hardware and software engineering.
